Dr. Habwe Florence Ayiera

UASU Maseno Chapter > Dr. Habwe Florence Ayiera

Habwe began her career as a graduate assistant at Maseno University in August 2008 under the student development programme. In 2009, she was promoted to serve in the position of a Tutorial Fellow in the department of Nutrition and Health as she continued with formal education. In 2015 after completion of her PhD studies, she was promoted to the position of Lecturer. Florence has since published one book, four book chapters, five peer review journal articles and six conference proceedings. In 2013, Florence was awarded the AU-TWAS Young Scientists National Award in Earth and Life Sciences by the Kenyan ministry of higher education on behalf of The African Union and The World Academy of Sciences. Besides lecturing, Florence participated in community service where she organized her students to offer free nutrition assessment services to Maseno University staff, students and the community surrounding the university. This was done through an informal organization known as MUNDSA (Maseno University Nutrition & Dietetics Students Association) of which she was the patron for the period 2013-2016. The aim of this organization’s service was to identify malnutrition issues within the population and offer nutritional counselling geared towards a healthy population. She and others discussed the industrial changes taking place within the Maseno University Academic Staff Union (UASU) and recognized the need for an improved worker’s union representation. Gradually, Habwe began to form a plan of action. Her first task she thought was to become a calm voice of reason within the union. This culminated into her campaign slogan “A Calm Voice of Reason” on which she joined the union as a chapter trustee in April 2021. A trustee’s role for a five year period according to the union’s constitution is to; oversee all the funds and other assets of the chapter; meet with the chapter executive committee once every three months; and, prepare and submit a report to the National Trustees.
